While I enjoyed seeing manyWe love zoos and visit them in every new city. Ueno Zoo opens 9:30 to 17:00 (tickets sold until 16:00) and closes every Monday (closes Tuesday if Monday is a public holiday or Tokyo Citizen's Day [Oct 1]) and December 29 through January 1.
The animals were well cared for, had toys and didn’t appear in poor condition.

It’s a large zoo and can’t really be seen properly all in one day. This zoo is located in Ueno Park and was opened in 1882; it covers 35 acres and is the city's oldest zoo.
The zoo temporarily had no pandas after the death of Ling Ling in 2008, but two new pandas moved in in 2011 and had a baby in 2017. Spending the day with a private guide allows for a custom-built sightseeing itinerary.
