We did see a few 2WD saloon cars up there, and I’ve heard some more reports from people who made it up there without a 4WD so I know it’s possible, but having seen the road conditions, I never would’ve tried. No 4x4 necessary but it is very steep with many bends on the tarmac part.

2WD (Saloon only) can really go up and even going down is not a big issue, but you need to consider having flat tires since theres still a long stretch of unpaved road and you need to go down before sunset since theres no light in the road.
