EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University Extension and MSU AgBioResearch will host a cover crops virtual field day Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Just because kids are all stuck at home doesn’t mean you can’t have an awesome Field Day!Many of us are trying to run a Virtual Field Day Event at our schools, so I thought you might want to check out how I’m doing it at our school.I also added a few extra challenges that I thought would be fun for my students to try out.For starters, we decided to roll out 2 videos a week, because as a parent of 3 kiddos at home right now I can attest to the fact that parents are extremely overwhelmed with assignments and duties, while also trying to work from home and manage kids.I thought that releasing 2 videos at a time might increase the chance of participation from students and parents since each game and activity only takes about 60 seconds to complete once it’s set up.I also made it clear that the purpose was to HAVE FUN and CONNECT with each other.

I let parents and students know that it was voluntary and will not be graded or assessed in any way and that they can pick their favorite games or events or do them all, it’s up to them.I don’t have anything against anyone who decides to have kids fill out and submit scorecards and does virtual medals or competitions, but I felt that this wasn’t best for our school and again I didn’t want to overwhelm parents and students with another to do list item.I made the video below to explain things and like I said we will be sending out 2 videos a week in the newsletter as our Weekly Virtual Field Day Challenge.I asked students and parents to post any photos or videos to our schools facebook page or they can post on twitter and tag us while also using the Each week we will challenge kids to complete 1-2 events and post them to social media by linking up the below videos in the school newsletter.Hope that was helpful, like I said I decided to keep it really simple in this overwhelming time, but there are a ton of different ways to do it, so think through your specific situation and do what’s best for you and your students.Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this. I tried to list as many alternatives for equipment as I could think of-Students and families can choose from 20 different games and activities-Everyone can choose to keep score or just play for funThis is created in google slides which means you can make any changes that you want-In order to make changes you have to make your own copy first! We are doing a Virtual Field Day today and I’ve been sharing ideas all week but just came upon yours. The third North Iowa Local Food Connection Virtual Field Day will take place this weekend. We have many children learning English and they were able to participate because of the helpful videos. I am running into a problem. Field day is finally here and it doesn’t look anything like I imagined it would when I started rough drafting ideas back in February. Unfortunately, I can’t give you access to my hard copy otherwise it will mess everything upI tried to make the set up and process as simple as I could. Researchers and outreach specialists will discuss how interseeding cover crops into standing corn can help to improve soil nutrients, reduce erosion and decrease weed development. We tested them out and they seem to working just fine on our end. Field Day MUST go on! Thoughts?Hey thanks for reaching out to me! I was able to figure out how to stop it from advancing when just clicking on a slide but when I use my fingers on the pad it advances to the next side on. But we do provide students with opportunities to reward themselves every time they come to PE class. Glad they loved the resource! thank you!
