They have strong Katana samurai which are a good balanced anti-infantry unit between attacking and defending. Too easy, but good for a beginner: Chosokabe, Shimazu
You start in northern Japan so it is easier to push down south. Elite units can break them, but they'll hold out for a while if you're careful with them. Generally, you want to keep your Samurai as your elite units for executing maneuvers and performing key actions throughout the battle (like taking out key units and reinforcing parts of your line), while your ashigaru hold the line and rain down arrows on the bulk of your enemy's force.Making all-Samurai armies is fun, but it will put you in financial issues and severely limit the number of armies that you can field on the map. They have awesome archers and are amazing if you are a defensively focused Total War player.
It also gets a bonus to Katana Samurai, the backbone of any japanese army.Yeah that Katana boon is great. I finished the campaign on easy, normal, hard and very hard using Shimazu, Tokugawa, Date and Chosokabe respectively.
Chesokobe is also a good choice. They start at the northern tip of Japan and therefore only have to worry about pushing in one direction throughout the campaign and only have to worry about land invasion from one side. If you want a challenge, Ikko Ikki and Uesugi. hammoud 9 years ago #1.
