I had never seen a Russian movie with English subtitles. It is not, however, a funny or light movie in any way. Hollywood's movers and shakers can learn something from The Return: that a film masterpiece can be made on a $500,000 budget. I also liked the scenery in this movie, particularly in the last part. Even though I don't know what it is like to have a distance or missing parent, I feel I've suffered the same feelings that other children in this situation must have. The storyline is humane and authentic, the characters simultaneously broken but triumphant. This film as others have mentioned seems a bit slow, but I have to say was compelling to watch. I felt more empathy for the father, and the behavior of his sons, particularly Ivan, infuriated me.
