In 1925, The Oratory Prep school opened with four pupils at Rose Hill in Emmer Green near Reading; In 1938, the OPS moved back into the Caversham Park site. The well known statue of Our Lady was not part of the original 1693 altar, but instead came from the Oratorians first London … The Oratory had always been largely staffed by laymen, and the last Oratorian Headmaster was Fr Henry Tristram in 1931. Oratorians, following the example of the Oratory's namesake Saint Martin, connect their spiritual lives to the needs of the wider world by engaging in at least one continuous corporal work of mercy in the Name of Jesus Christ, who calls us to care for the needs of the world, especially the poor, the hungry, the sick, the infirm, and those imprisoned. Founding the first Oratorian community of priests in Birmingham in the late 1840s, he continued to write major works of theology and philosophy as a Catholic. Saturday 23rd June was a scorcher! Today we turn our attention to what is probably the next most well known altar of the London Oratory, the Lady Altar, located just to the right of the sanctuary. We call ourselves a family and we mean it. Almost 100 years later, in 1883, it was re-erected in the London Oratory. The fathers came to live there in 1577, in which year they opened the Chiesa Nuova, built on the site of the old S. Maria, and transferred the exercises to a new oratory.

He was made a Cardinal in 1879 and he died in 1890. A leading light of the Oxford Movement which was seeking to move the Church of England in a Catholic direction, Newman left his considerable prospects, and many friends, behind when he converted to Catholicism in 1845 at a time when there was still widespread prejudice against Catholics in Britain. Since that time, the school has grown and, has moved twice, firstly to Caversham Park in 1922, and then to Woodcote in 1942. Newman was born in 1801, and was one of the foremost churchmen and theologians of his day.

Over four hundred Old Oratoriasn served in the Great War and 84 gave their lives; The Oratory School moved site to Caversham in 1922, taking over the buildings and grounds of Caversham Park. The school opened its doors to nine boys at the beginning of May 1859. Another year of events has passed and these have included a quiz night, Gala Dinner, golf day and Headmaster’s XV rugby match. His writing interests include vestment design, book arts, architecture and liturgical history. We are really proud of our broad and rich curriculum and strong exam results.The Oratory is a vibrant day and boarding community.
